FEEL LIKE DISCOVERING LILLE ?
Lille Free Tour invites you to go on a guided tour to discover the districts and history of the capital of Flanders. From the legend of its foundation to the construction of the Euralille-towers, your guide will show you around the city on a relaxed, 2-hour walking tour, from Monday to Friday, come sunshine or rain.
AT WHAT PRICE ?
The tour rests on a “pay what you like” principle. You pay at the end of the tour what you think is appropriate in proportion with the quality of the tour and your budget. This method incites the guide to do his best to make you discover the city and its history in the most interesting and fun way possible.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE ?

ABOUT YOUR GUIDES
Passionate about history and travelling, Nicolas is the one who put this tour together. Originally from the west of France, he first discovered Lille as a tourist in 2012 and ended up making it his home 2 years later. After having learned to love this town and its region, he decided to share his knowledge and impressions in a simple and relaxed way. The concept of a free tour did not exist in Lille, so he created his own tour after a lot of research and many walks in and around the city.
Lisa lives in Lille but she is originally from Antwerp. Her Belgian accent uncloaks her sometimes but don’t tell her, she may make you walk in the tiny Cobbled streets in the old town more than necessary ! In 2017, she decided to change career to dedicate herself to her passion of meeting new people and make them discover the history of Lille. By bike, scooter or walking, she will show the city… if you can follow her !
Gianluca was born in Turin, Italy. He graduated in history, has a passion for traveling and loves meeting new people. He arrived in Lille as part of a European volunteering programme, but then decided to stay indefinitely in the capital of French Flanders, a soulful city filled with opportunities. According to him, this melting pot of western European cultures is less known than Paris or Bordeaux, but at least as charming as them. He likes to define France “a sweet country”.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
A free tour is a guided tour without a participation fee and for which you don’t need to sign up. The idea behind it is that you are free to join and leave the tour whenever you wish and that the tips for the guide depend on the quality of the service and the budget of each participant.
You can pay whatever you think the tour is worth or whatever you can spare. As such, you can thank the guide with a simple handshake or tip him the amount you find appropriate. The guide is only paid by the participants and has no other income.
The guide will be waiting for you at the meeting point located at the Paris Gate (Porte de Paris), Roger Salengro square, around 15 min before the start of the tour. He will be wearing a t-shirt or carrying a sign that clearly shows the Lille Free Tour logo.
There are visits every day, from Monday to Friday. The french tour is on demand and starts at 10am from Porte de Paris. There are two English tour per day from monday to friday. The first one starts at 10am from Gastama Hostel and the second one at 2pm from Porte de Paris. The tour at 2 pm is also done on Saturday and Sunday. However, should it happen that the guide cannot make it, the information will be put on this website as well as on Facebook.
As long as there are visitors, there’s a tour! Sunshine or rain, the guide will help you discover the city. Nevertheless, as the guide is unable to share his umbrella with everyone, it might be wise to bring your own.
The tour lasts about 2 hours, but don’t worry: you won’t be walking the entire time. The guide regularly stops to give explanations and will make sure you can sit when possible.
A toilet break has not been planned, but you are of course free to use the public toilets or those in bars and pubs (when allowed). Please note however that the guide may not be able to wait for you.
We also arrange personalised private tours for groups. In that case, the fare is set. Don’t hesitate to contact us for an estimation.

“Really enjoyed this tour. Nicholas was very interesting and even though we had already been in Lille for 2 days and had walked around a lot ourselves, he brought us to new hidden places and told us lots of the city’s history. He was very informative and even though the tour lasted nearly 2.5hrs, we weren’t tired at the end…”
Rachel from Dublin
“This is a perfect example of a free tour! The guide is a young, interested and funny guy who knows a lot about the city. For our visit, he even worked on a sunday! Thanks a lot”
